Camouflaged BMW X3 causes bomb scare outside NY museum

May 10th, 2010 Horatiu B. No comments

In a breaking news article, Autoblog reports that a BMW X3 prototype wearing the now famous psychedelic triggered a bomb scare and the resulting evacuation of several blocks along Central Park West near the American Museum of Natural History on Sunday afternoon in New York City.

While the story has yet to be confirmed by BMW, we will give you the details as related by Autoblog with the mention that we are working on getting an official reply from BMW North America. Edit: Confirmed by BMWNA.

A 2011 BMW X3 prototype was currently tested by BMW in the Big Apple and the car was briefly left running while parked. A woman walking her dog rightly thought the vehicle looked suspicious, most likely due to the funky camouflage, and alerted the police.

Police responded to investigate, and after clearing the area of bystanders, found no reason for alarm. Everyone was safe, although the back window of the X3 prototype was apparently shattered in the process.

Next BMW model to be unveiled in 2010 is the second generation BMW X3. The mid Premium SAV has recently entered the final evaluation phase and several prototypes are being tested on U.S. soil.

While the first generation X3 was assembled in Austria by Magna Steyr automaker, the new F25 model joins the X-family at their Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

The photos below were captured at the race track facility near the BMW M Performance School in Spartanburg, and several F25 prototypes are rolling along the previous X3 or the new X5 M. 2011-bmw-x3-spy-photos-12

The 2011 BMW X3 runs on the next generation 3 Series platform and measures 15.15 feet in length, two inches longer than the current model featuring more rounded design lines and a sleeker look. The F25 is moving up in size with dimensions closer to the first generation BMW X5.

The “kicked-up” window line that first saw the daylight in the X3 will be again evident and it will be seen as an X3 characteristic, a design element that will be associated with the model.

While sitting higher than the X1, the new X3 seems to have inherited some of the features from the new entry-level compact SAV, mostly around the front-fascia.

Looking at the spy photo above we can see the headlights shape being similar to the BMW 5 Series GT featuring the same angel eyes with a “raised eyebrow”.

The kidneys are sitting lower than in the current model and below them, there is another air opening as seen on the X5.

Inside, we expect to see a similar design as in the newly X1, a far more luxurious approach that will fix some of the complaints the X3 owners previously had. Along with high quality materials, the 2011 X3 will offer several options seen in higher end models: Night Vision System, Head-Up Display, Adaptive Headlights or seats with ventilation

Fuel efficiency will play a big role in the new model, thanks to the EfficientDynamics program. Sources close to the Bavarian automaker state that the 2011 BMW X3 will bring lower fuel consumption numbers that its competing models from Stuttgart and Ingolstadt. A wide range of engines will be available, from four cylinder petrol and diesels to the more powerful six-cylinder turbos. The entry level models are expected to be the xDrive18d and xDrive23d, while at the top, the xDrive35i will take the crown. A hybrid version based of the new X3 is also on BMW’s agenda.

While not confirmed, the North American market will most likely receive the xDrive28i and xDrive35i models, but many BMW consumers are hoping to see a diesel powerplant as well.

The 2011 BMW X3 will be unveiled in the May-June time frame, with sales beginning in the U.S. in early 2011.

With less than three months left before the first official photos will hit our inbox, the next and second generation BMW X3 continues to be in the center of attention. First Final Evaluation Phase photos were spotted last week by the fearless spy photographers.

Today, AutoWeek magazine publishes their latest rendering of the premium mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle. As portrayed in this rendering as well, the 2011 BMW X3 has grown in size, 15.15 feet in length. The redesigned/reinvented X3 is built on the next generation 3 Series platform and features a more rounded design lines and a sleeker look.

Since the X1 is the new entry-level model in the X family, the 2011 X3 will move up a notch, both in size and style with similar dimensions to the first generation BMW X5.

The “kicked-up” window line that first saw the daylight in the X3 will be again evident and it will be seen as an X3 characteristic, a design element that will be associated with the model. It will also have will have a roof line slightly lower than the current mode, giving the car a sportier look.

The newly redesigned X3 will be aimed at customers looking for a dynamic SAV and United States remains the main market.

The future X3 is moving its production from the Magna factories in Graz, Austria, to the U.S soil at the Spartanburg plant, a move that will reduce some of the manufacturing costs.

The new BMW X3 will be introduced in late 2010 with sales beginning in 2011.
