BMW uses social network sites to promote the new BMW X1

July 1st, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

Edmunds InsideLine just posted an interesting piece of news around the recently revealed BMW X1: BMW is heavily using the social media sites to promote the X1 and to reach out to the targeted younger crowd.

After the X1 concept unveiling at the Paris Motor Show last fall, BMW launched a Facebook page dedicated to the X1 which soon has become an important medium of reporting new information. Within a few months, the Facebook X1 page is reporting over 1,700 members.

With the fast rising of Twitter, BMW opened an X1 Twitter account as well, which as of today has over 500 followers waiting daily for more X1 photos and information. And of course, Youtube could not have been left off out of the social media circle and all the official videos were released through the BMWWebTV account.

This brings us back to an article we wrote back in May where we talked about BMW X1 urban vehicle being geared towards a younger demographic who enjoy outdoor activities and would still like to use a spacious car to transport their surfboards, skis, snowboards or climbing equipment.  Most of the people fitting this profile spend a lot of their time online and connected, so reaching out to them by using Twitter, Facebook or Youtube, is just brilliant and…..it can be very cost effective.

BMW X1 official photos revealed

According to Automotive News, the average age of a BMW buyer is 48, so there was obviously time for a new approach in order to reach the right X1 audience and frankly, these social networks not only offer that medium, but they also offer a large user base and……it is pretty much free.

Tony Douglas, innovations manager at BMW’s Munich marketing department, says, with the social networking audience, “You don’t buy it; you have to earn it. Content and timing has to be good, and you use a bit more brainpower. It is not the blind media spend.”

Same thoughts are shared by Shawn Ticehurst, marketing communications manager of BMW North America who told Inside Line that “[we] are targeting a younger crowd with the X1, opening up a whole new gamut of buyers. The use of things like Twitter, Myspace and Facebook is [not only] a way to appeal to a younger buyer, but we also see them as media opportunities that are continually growing. [BMW] is getting into those medians while they are in a fairly young phase.”

BMWBLOG had a similar discussion back in February with Tom Plucinsky, BMW’s Product and Technology Manager in North America, where we touched this subject prior to all these Twitter and Facebook initiatives. We saw an opportunity there as well, the same as we have seen with our blog and we’re glad to see that BMW is constantly looking for new ways to connect with their customers.

BMWBLOG is a huge advocate of social media and most of our efforts in the past years focused on social networks and connecting with our readers and fans. In a way, we believe we were one of the first auto blogs to make use of these social tools and even our latest project Be A Designer is another example of how we involve the BMW community.

Why would Australia ban the “Expression of Joy” TV ad?

July 1st, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

Herald Sun Australia reports that the new BMW Z4 campaign, “Expression of Joy” has been banned from the TV stations. The reason: [the ad] “would encourage car hoons to spin and burn their tyres.” The entity that forced the ban is the Advertising Standard Bureau, the Australian’s advertising watchdog.

Now those of us that live in the U.S. might find that quite ridiculous since we’re used to seeing a large variety of TV ads that are at least morally questionable, but truth is that even after watching the Z4 “Expression of Joy” clip, we can’t see eye-to-eye with them. True, there is some spinning in the commercial, but it all revolves around slow paced circles that have a single purpose: to paint the surface underneath in order to create the art work envisioned by the artist Robin Rhode and director Jake Scott.

The interesting part is that the campaign is being used across the globe and it has been successfully running in the U.S or UK for quite some time now.

So the question is: are those people really that conservative? “The board noted that the advertisement does depict in a number of places the driver intentionally allowing the wheels of the car to lose traction and perform . . . a four-wheel drift”. Come on….seriously? Lose traction….drifting….this commercial is all about art and there is obviously no intention to promote any street racing, Tokyo drifting or whatever they want to call it…

z4-expression-of-joy

Of course, BMW responded back and they were pretty much in line with what we just said: “It is a bit of a case of a piece of art and the freedom of art being thwarted by Victoria’s anti-hoon laws”. Keyword: ART.

BMW spokesman Toni Andreevski continued: “We believe the audience can distinguish between fantasy and reality.”

We honestly don’t even see how could someone confuse that commercial for something else, when we first saw it, we were focusing mostly on the painting part and that part only.

BMW decided to let this one go: “….Safety is important to us, and we have agreed not to appeal.”

We love our Aussies friends very much, but we couldn’t let this one slide without reporting it.

Here is the full commercial:

July 1st, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

And the wait is over, we have finally received the first images of the BMW X1 production model. After months of teasing and prolonged marketing, BMW reveals one of the most talked about BMW in the last few months.

Our readers’ opinions have been split for months now, some of us enjoy the look of the new X1, while others don’t see the purpose of a new entry-level Sports Activity Vehicle. The BMW X1 will initially launch in Europe and we expect to see the X1 in the U.S. past 2010.

The X1 is mainly powered by diesel engines, five of these models will represent the core of the X1 family. The most powerful X1 model, xDrive28i, will be the powered by a petrol engine which outputs 258 horsepower and 228 lb-ft(310Nm) of torque at 2,600 rpm.

The highest end X1 diesel model will be sold under the xDrive23d naming convention and produces 204 horsepower and 295 lb-ft(400Nm) of torque at 2,000 rpm. This is the second fastest X1 vehicle with 0 t0 62 mph in 7.3 seconds.

Be A Designer: We designed the BMW 3 Series the way you wanted to!

June 30th, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

Over a week ago, we launched one of the most unique and interesting projects involving the BMW community. We decided to give you, our readers, a  chance to express your opinion on the design lines of the current BMW 3 Series sedan. Your ideas and suggestions would have formed the base of future graphic renderings which will showcase the 3 Series just the way you wanted to.

We have always valued your input, comments, suggestions and this was a way for us to repay you and allow you to become more involved with our blog. To make this even more interesting, we teamed up with Automarket.ro, which presented the same challenges to their readers. A question has arisen from the beginning: will people across the globe share the same design opinions and passion for BMW?

Well, today we have our answer and thanks to the hard work of rendering artist Andrei Arvavarii, who had to scan through the tens of comments to find the most common requested design elements, we are able to bring you not one, but two different versions of the current BMW 3 Series Sedan.

Be A Designer BMW 3 Series
As you can see, one version of the front-end is a bit closer to the reality, but the second one brings out a lot of the M1 Hommage elements and it’s rather quite interesting. Now let’s see what the Automarket readers came up with: Be A Designer for Automarket
This has been a fun project and judging by the positive reactions we’ve had, we will continue it in just a few weeks. Of course, many of you might wonder which model will we be choosing next and so far, our thoughts gear towards the new BMW 7 Series, a model that has been slightly criticized when it came out, but started to grow on everyone lately.

We would like to thank you everyone for the comments and we hope you enjoyed this as much as we did.

AutoCritical

  • Have more of a light catching feature on the lower half of the body side.
  • I was looking at the X1, and my favorite ‘feature’ in its design is how the crease around the DLO (seen at the C-Pillar) suggests the connection, under the belt line, to the lower light catcher at the base of the doors.

Mauro Corti, bm3rmy, Vaybach Khan, AiRi, Lariv

  • taillights- changed like 3er coupe

Mauro Corti, bm3rmy, Lariv, Paul

  • More integrated door mirrors.

Mauro Corti

  • the car is too narrow and high in the back, I’d like it a lillte more like audi a4, lower and larger

bm3rmy

  • front bumper- in the middle looks like passat, change that, make it to look that the car has some muscle.
  • front lights - I would like to be more aggressive - to bi a little bit inside of the front bumper and to have a kinetic look with some new innovative features like audi but not like waves.

Vaybach Khan

  • maybe a little more coupe side windows..with a longer trunk aiming to the ground…
  • the front end and grill i would like to be profiled in opposite way then current, like e24 perhaps..with big grills

Lariv

  • New alloy wheels

Lance

  • Sportier bumper like the M3 Coupe, but more solid - not just fins.
  • Headlights - must use white LED fed corona rings like the 5GT with chrome eyelids - not this white transparent colour of ice-cream tubs.
  • Grille - larger and widerlike the Z4 in silver with chrome surrounds. Shape must be changed to a trapezium that is indented - not a flat nose.
  • The bumper edges around the wheel is too sharp, there must be a more E36 type of premium look.
  • The rear bumper must be more muscular and sporty.
  • And that rear wheel arch bulge like the ones on the CS please

Moncho

  • M1 concept front-end lights

Giom

  • Widen the kidney grills slightly so they’re closer to the edging, and maybe enhance the chrome surrounds… ie, make it a little thicker.
  • The windowsill line, raise that by not even an inch. This is to decrease the side window area, creating a more coupe like proportion.

Paul

  • try to use an orange light rod like those used for the halo lights. I always liked the constant orange rod on the 5ser and it was a shame it just wasnt used for the repeater
  • Also, there´s just to much going on on that back bumper…needs to be more clean with less lines
  • and the front bonnet always looks like its open and it needs to be straight instead of having all those grooves that fit the kidneys, that need to be maybe bigger but for sure thicker - try the m3 i like the way they are slightly “in” the bumper if you now what i mean.
  • also the chrome surroundings on the windows are a bit out of date…i am sure bmw already working on this as the new 7 and GT have them thicker.
  • Also ditch those fog lights..they are just so 90´s with that glass housing…dont go audis way as fiat and merc have but instead of the boring LED´s try to use a rod or something like the new RR has.

Edox

  • Front apron of the 135i coupé

Dakar Yellow E92 M3 “IND Portfolio Project”

June 30th, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

Our friends at IND-Distribution have another surprise for us: the first E92 M3 Dakar Yellow in North America. As a recognition to our great community we have here, they decided to release two exclusive photos of this car prior to the full press release which will go out on Friday.

We know that many of our readers are interested in modding or tuning up their BMWs, so it’s our pleasure to post from time to time photos of unique projects that revolve around BMW vehicles. With that being said, I asked the guys at IND to give us some more details about the mods used on their Dakar Yellow E92 M3.

In order to be an “IND portfolio build” the entire cars modification must be carefully selected by Ilia, one of the guys over at IND. We don’t have the final cost of this project, but be sure we’ll get that number after the press release goes out, it wil be interesting how much it would cost to turn a BMW M3 into an even more unique model.

Our experience at BMW M Performance School

June 30th, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

Let’s start this review with a different approach and tell you from the start my conclusion after a full day spent behind the wheel of some of the most powerful BMWs out there at the M Performance Driving School: amazing, exciting and educational.

I have been hearing for years about the BMW’s Performance Center Driving Schools and many of my friends or acquaintances have been bragging about it and since I write about BMWs daily, it became obvious that I have to try this experience myself. Before we go further into this article, I would like to disclaim the fact that BMW has offered this one day M course at no-charge for myself and Andrew, but I assure you that this article is objective as it can get.

The BMW Performance Delivery Center in Spartanburg offers quite a few exciting driving courses, from the Driver’s Program to M Performance ones and the BMW Motorcycle Rider training. BMW’s facility in Spartanburg caterers to a variety of drivers, from the less experiences ones to the advanced highly skilled drivers and even a Teen School which focuses on safety and caution.

contest-0891600x1200

Since I liked to think of myself as an experienced, fairly skilled driver(or at least I thought I was), my mind was set on the One-Day M School, a $1,295 course that revolves around Motorsport models available out there from BMW. The course emphasis on developing elementary high-performance driving capabilities, quick reflexes and eye coordination through a range of six exercises on the BMW slalom course, autocross and wet skid pad. Part of this package, BMW also gives you a free night at a Marriott hotel nearby and dinner.

Starting at 8:30am, the M School begins with an hour of introduction into the program and what we are trying to achieve that day. The highly skilled and very pleasant BMW instructors walked us through a few different driving scenarios and taught us one of the most important things in that day and something that it has been repeated to me over and over again: “Keep your eyes up” , “Look where you want to go”.

dsc_0002185

After the short theoretical session, everyone in the class was ready for the most exciting part: driving the BMW M3, M5 and M6 on the track and…..as hard as we can. Yes, you heard that right, pushing the Ms to the max is part of the deal. So if you own an M car and always been afraid to drive it as hard as you can, well, the M Performance School gives you that option.

All the M cars are equipped with the automatic transmission and the shifting paddles, making this experience even more fun. Our group, which included Andrew as well, started off with the M3s and the first exercise:

dsc_0008191

Proper turn-in and braking points.

After a short, but breathtaking demo from the BMW instructors, the moment has arrived: taking the E90 M3 with DCT for the first time on a race track.

Was I nervous? Absolutely, especially since I have never experienced anything similar to this, so the first few laps were “shy” in terms of speed and dynamics, but with constant real time guidance over the radio from the BMW instructors, I became more comfortable behind the wheel of this powerful M3 and started to push the car more and more and….more.

Have I made a lot of mistakes? No doubt, but the point of this school is to actually learn something and the instructors were very patient in correcting any mistakes I or the other drivers have made. This first exercise pretty much proved what I said earlier: I wasn’t as good of a driver as I thought I was, sure, I do well in a congested city traffic or on our Chicago highways, but not near a true skilled BMW driver. So once again, I was even more happier that I accepted this challenge and drove over 15 hours to attend this school.

M5 driving on a wet skid pad

With the first exercise out of the way, we moved onto the even more powerful BMW M5 vehicles and…..onto the wet skid pad, the famous skid pad I have heard from many other people that attended the school. And boy, was that a challenge…..

The idea here is to go as fast as you can on this circle shaped wet skid pad and without losing control of your car. Same as before, the instructors took us on a quick demo where they clearly showed us their own skills and also the power of these M5 models. So after a quick five minutes ride with them during which I stopped breathing, it was my turn to show off my  skills, the very few that I had prior to this school. We turned off the DSC(Dynamic Stability Control) and started the exercise. We induced some oversteering and understeering by either quickly pushing the gas pedal or slowly modulating the throttle. And WOW, that DSC really makes a different since I literally spun out at least five times when it was turned off.

But surprising, I started to get better and better and by the time the exercise was over, I managed to get the hang of this and drifted nicely around the circle without any spinning. At the end, we went ahead and turn the DSC back on and as you would expect, the M5 handles far better when the electronic assistance comes in play.

Overall, a fun, useful driving exercise that could save your life in many situations.

dsc_0164142

Braking exercise with the powerful M6

The third  exercise of the day involved the beautiful, sporty M6. By now I built some confidence in myself and I was ready to take on the next challenge: braking exercise. As the instructors taught us in the classroom, sometimes going faster implies braking more and harder and this new test was going to prove us that. Now we all know how powerful the M6 is, 500 horsepower coming from a V10 engine, so the challenge here is to correctly approximate the stopping distance at different speeds while turning into a curve.

Not as easy as one would believe since the M6 can really reach high speeds in a matter of seconds, so to full disclose again, I kinda screwed up a few times since I was either going too fast or braking too slow. But by the end of this new challenge, I learned that using the brakes at the right moment can really get you through a sharp corner and most important, still remaining fast.

By the time this exercise was over, I was semi-exhausted, pumped, thrilled and anxious to learn more, but lunch time was here and courtesy of BMW, all the M School participants get to enjoy the warm food prepared by a chef right there and then. From the traditional American burgers to the famous German pork schnitzel, everyone had something to choose from. Oh….add the deserts and lots of beverages, and you’re having a mini fiesta there. Don’t be shy to eat as much as you want, you will need that energy for the second session of the day.

Shortly after lunch, we jumped into another classroom session where we learned more about responsible and efficient driving, stability control and a few other items. But the most exciting part of this section was the moment where BMW staff handed out some numbered USB keys to all of us. By this time, we were all intrigued and anxious to find out more.

Basically, each M car available to the participants comes equipped with in-car video cameras,  positioned either on the side or behind you overlooking the road. So what’s the purpose of these USB keys then? Well, very simple and typical BMW efficient: when you enter these USB keys into the in-car reader, the record function of these cameras activates and it uploads the footage onto BMW’s servers. So each time you would like to record yourself driving, either poorly or professional style, you simply just need to plug in the USB key. The number associate with the key gets attached to your car and name and four to six weeks after the course, BMW will mail you a professional DVD which will show footage from your driving experience. I won’t spoil all the details, but the setup is quite cool and as soon as I will receive mine, I will share it with everyone…..

Moving into the second driving session of the day, it was time for the first competition of the day:

Skid pad contest in the M6.

We all love challenges, right? So BMW decided to make this M School even more exciting for all the participants. Going over to a smaller skid pad, two M6s were placed on opposite sides of it and after six laps, whoever crosses their start line first, wins. And the winner takes all, meaning he gets to stay on the pad and wait for the next opponent. Being a smaller skid pad, braking and quickly accelerating here is key and a small sliding mistake can make you lose the race. I did well here, got closer to Andrew who beat me by less than a car distance, but once again, I realized that the more I advance in the course, the better I get….still not near a pro level, but much better than I was 5 hours before.

M5 racetrack session

With some experience under our belts now, BMW instructors moved us onto a larger race track where driving as fast as you can was key. The track also involved some braking zones and the larger skid pad where obviously we had to be more cautious. But the fun in this new exercise lay in the long straight line where the M5 could achieve up to 100 mph in third gear only….YES, that SMG really rocks here! Now imagine at the end of this straight line that there is a 90 degrees corner, so prior to that slamming the brakes as hard as you can it’s imperative. I was a bit reluctant to really do that in the beginning, but again under the guidance of our BMW instructor sitting in a control tower, I started to really slam them and position myself properly for that corner. Since you’re running behind other cars here and someone might slow you down or you might slow down others, the instructors will guide you to a safe zone where you can start a new fast lap.

This exercise incorporates more of the things we learned earlier, from the wet skid pad to the braking exercise and proper turn-ins.

M3 Timed Laps

The last and one of the most exciting sessions of the day involved timed laps in the gorgeous M3 sedans. The laps are far shorter than the ones we did prior to this in the M5, but the point of this exercise was to test speed, acceleration and competitive spirit. There were a few ground rules here: don’t hit any cones or step outside the stopping zone, otherwise a 2 seconds penalty will be imposed on you.

So, I started off slowly, trying to learn the corners and the potential obstacles. First lap: 28 and some seconds, still far from the 22.1 seconds record on that track. Since we had six laps, I knew I could do better and this was a chance to prove our buddy instructor Matt, that we actually learned something today: Eyes up, look ahead and go fast!

Second lap came somewhere around 25 seconds, not bad, but still slower than my colleagues. By this time, Andrew was already in his 24 seconds range. Third one, 24.00 seconds, but ….stepped out of the stop zone bounds so got penalized 2 seconds. Forth  and fifth one, a bit higher than 24 seconds. But on the sixth lap, managed to get that 24 seconds I was aiming for and by this time, I was hoping I will be the second in our group. Unfortunately for myself, my buddy Andrew pulled his “A” game and scored a 23.3 seconds and took the lead in our group.

Definitely a fun exercise and very competitive, an usual thing in any race that involves cars. As an out of topic mention, one of the girls in a different group managed to overcome all the alpha BMW males, so she received a huge round of applause at the end.

Now, we’re nearly the completion of our exciting, thrilling day, but not quite over yet. For those of us looking for the ultimate thrill and heart pumping, BMW instructors took us around the full race track onboard the M5s. And WOW……trying to shoot video and staying in my car seat was quite challenging, these guys were really pros and drove these M5s in a way I have never seen before: drifting, perfect cornering, braking, accelerating, you name it….They really showed us how capable these M cars really are and that it’s all about the driver. The BMW instructors come from racing backgrounds, some of them even played stunt roles in different movies, but most important, they are genuinely nice guys and true BMW enthusiasts. For them, this school is more than just a job, it’s a passion and that reflects in the way they communicate with all the participants.

Since we enjoyed this One Day M School so much, we might be going back again, this time for the 2 Day M School which is held at the Virginia International Raceway, a class that will continue building the skills acquired during the first session.

At the end, I hope that my introductory statement makes more sense now and I hope that you feel and understand in a way the exciting that this M Driving Experience has given me. It truly is an unique experience and from a BMW fan point of view, I’m glad that we have this option of connection the driver to the car in a way that you can never imagine. And looking at the availability chart, it is clear that many BMW drivers share the same point of view since the One Day M School is booked many months in advance.

BMW’s City Electric Vehicle coming to U.S. by 2012

June 29th, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

In a recent interview for Car And Driver, BMW chairman and CEO, Norbert Reithofer revealed a few more details regarding the launch of BMW’s first battery-powered vehicle in the United States.

Built under the Project i program and referenced by BMW executives as the “BMW City”, the new all all electric vehicle is expected to reach U.S. soil by 2012.

The “City” is rumored to be a three-door hatchback vehicle specifically designed for the U.S. market to meet the upcoming California Zero Emission vehicle regulation which stipulates that large auto makers to sell between a few hundred and a few thousand Zero Emission Vehicle every year starting in 2012.

Project i rendering 001

Rendering by AutoBild

As C&D mentions, the BMW City or MegaCity as we heard it was called in the past, will be powered by an all electric engine and it will offer a four-seat configuration. The lithium-ion batter is expected to provide 100-mile range.

The BMW City vehicles will also be powered by gasoline and diesel engines, with the first prototype being launched featuring gasoline engines developed in collaboration with the Motorrad division.

One interesting fact revealed, but in a way expected by everyone, was that BMW is developing these new vehicles especially for the highly congested cities in Asia, including the fast growing China.

As we announced before, BMW has yet to decide on the brand name, the options on the table are still between BMW, MINI and even Isetta. Herr Reithofer does hint that it may also get a new name.

Still lots of uncertainties, but hopefully we will have more information on this at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Rendering: BMW 1 Series GT

June 29th, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

There is no secret anymore that BMW is working on a Gran Turismo version of its future BMW 1 Series and this subject has been discussed and analyzed many times before. What we didn’t really have up to this point were some artists rendering that will give us an impression of what the 1GT might actually look like.

Of course, these renderings are usually based on personal opinions and might not reflect the final product, but we still find them interesting since it shows the endless design possibilities.

The BMW 1 Series GT uses a new modular platform available for all the upcoming 1 Series models. The backbone of these models was designed especially for this purpose so every model can have a variation backbone, simply be moving suspension points and firewalls to areas that will benefit each vehicle. Corroborated with more parts sharing, this new approach will allow BMW to reduce even more the production costs.

BMW 1 Series GT rendering 01

BMW 1 Series GT will be a 5-door vehicle, a  mix of a hatch, wagon and sedan and to reflect the Gran Turismo, the 1 GT will have an elevated driving position.

Even though our friends at Automarket speculate that the 1 GT will import some design elements from the legendary 2002 model, our sources have not yet confirmed that.

The rendering does seem to be in line with the one created by the Autobild graphics artist, Huckfeldt, a rendering that we enjoyed back then.

As soon as the next generation 1 Series enters the Final Evaluation Phase, we will get more details and most likely, new, fresh renderings.

New details on the 2012 BMW 3 Series

June 29th, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

BMW’s marketing machine continues to pull forward and today, we have new information regarding the next generation BMW 3 Series which will be launched in 2012.While the details have been very sketchy up to this point, we’re glad to see that BMW decided to satisfy our curiosity by releasing some general details.

Beside learning more about the new 3 Series design, we also get a quick introduction of the 3 Series Gran Turismo model as well, a vehicle that will follow the 5 Series GT and the upcoming 1er GT.

Courtesy of Scott27 from GCZ:

“The proportions of a typical 3er, evident since the E36 through to the E46 and currently the E90 will remain meaning squat proportions, short rear overhang and wheels placed to each corner. The overall look is more slimmer and more toned than the E90.

Rendering 2012 3 Series

The typical BMW glasshouse remains with the new design link of a shadow hoffmeister kick as featured on the 7er and X1 being featured on the car this time wrapping around the rear door quarterlight and forming a surface line not cut into the body to form the shoulder line of the car where the door handles will meet this follows through to the front of the car where it is broken up by the front wheel arch and then continues to meet the front headlight unit. The rear flanks from the rear light towards the rear door are left with a subtle line which links to the shape of the rear lights and the bootlid sculpture.

The front of the car receives a widened but not too large kidney grille , smaller than the F10 5er with shapely lighting units surround the grille. design sculpture under the lighting units is less prominent than featured on the Z4 under each headlight unit there is a semi circle shape which in the center allows for a V shaped opening where the kidney grille is placed.

The rear of the car offers a typical BMW layout with the classic L shape lighting units the larger part of the L shaped lights that sits on the corner and wraps around the rear of the car dips at the lower edge this allows for the rear bumper scoop that signifies the tailgate is flush design wise with the dip form of the rear lighting units.

The Coupe and Cabrio models will again take on a different appearance from the Sedan and Touring. Again the front and rear appearance will separate from the sedan with unique shaped lighting units and design sculpture.

The Cabrio will retain the folding hardtop as BMW have found the E93 to be the most successful 3er cabrio since the E30 when a proper BMW cabrio was introduced (not counting the baur models.) Customers also like how the hardtop E93 has successful retained a coherent design instead of sitting under the A-pillar or having the rear end raised to accommodate the roof (Lexus - take note). Although next time around the 3er Roof will get lighter possibly using aluminum , but it will retain the identity and join the future BMW 6er and the current Z4 Roadster with folding hardtops for their premium image.

The 3er Gran Turismo is borne out of the idea of reintroducing a highly sporting individual model. Internally named as “Progressive Activity Coupe” the 3er Gt takes it form as a substitute to a coupe or Touring.

A 3er Coupe might not have the flexibility of a Touring for a customer who like the 3er Coupe but is deemed to be impractical , to the same of the 3er Touring or a BMW X3 for their characteristics.

BMW 3er Gran Turismo is a solution for those who want more character with a coupe or indeed a Touring. Less niche than the BMW 5er Gran Turismo, BMW aim to position the 3er as a sporting alternative to the Touring or indeed the X3. The 3er Gran Turismo takes a traditional 3er shape but the roof slopes back towards the rear of the car giving it a very raked shooting brake but lower than a Touring rear end. The rear windshield will be shorter although it will wrap around the rear of the car for added visibility , not too much though , instead of a larger side window like a touring the 3er GT will inherit a smaller quarterlight.

The interior although based on the 3er will feature some exclusive GT alterations such as a shelf like dash , and a more raked central console.
BMW 3er Gran Turismo will be an excellent addition to the sports sedan/wagon segment it will be unique and more individual than the conventional Touring.

Like the 1er , The new 3er will take advantage of the new modular platform, again this allows BMW to spin off extra models , make savings in costs and enable production to very efficient.

BMW will also enable the next 3er to feature the very latest in Efficient Dynamics technologies - like the 1er there will be an active hybrid model using a range extended 3 cylinder engine connected to an electric motor as well as lightweight resistance tires , aerodynamically designed alloy wheels , BMW active aerodynamics , solar roof panel for extra energy efficiency in the use of interior controls , Brake energy regeneration , stop start technology , pre-heating technology for the engine, gearbox and differential.”

New BMW 7 Series Hybrid spied at Nurburgring

June 29th, 2009 Horatiu B. No comments

BMW continues the testing trials of its new BMW 7 Series Hybrid model and this time it was spotted at the Nurburgring track. BMW’s hybrid  dubbed 755ih will launch at the end of this year and it is the first BMW model to use the dual-mode ActiveHybrid system, which has discrete modes for high-torque, low speed driving as well as for high-speed cruises.

The second hybrid to use the same technology will be the X6 ActiveHybrid which will launch this year as well.

The BMW 7 Series Hybrid uses a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine that delivers 407 horsepower and 442lb ft, working in combination with an AC electric motor that can add another 20 horserpower and 155lb ft of torque. In mild hybrid form, the result is 15 percent less fuel consumption and emissions (in the EU test cycle) versus a combustion engine only equivalent.

To improve even more the fuel efficiency, the start/stop technology and the part-time alternator have been implemented in the Hybrid version as well. Other standard hybrid features, such as regenerative braking and optimized aerodynamics.

The 7 Series Hybrid comes as a response to Mercedes-Benz’s S400 Bluetec Hybrid and it’s expected to cost over $100,000.
